World Cup 2026: England Beat France in Ten-Goal Thriller as Spain and Argentina Prepare for the FinalThis is a title

What to expect from the final

The final is likely to be determined by control of midfield, defensive concentration and the ability of each team’s leading attackers to convert limited opportunities.

Spain will attempt to dominate possession and move Argentina’s defensive structure out of position. Argentina may be more comfortable allowing Spain to control the ball before attacking quickly when possession changes.

Individual battles involving Spain’s younger attacking players and Argentina’s experienced defensive unit could prove decisive. The match also carries major historical significance. Spain are seeking another World Cup title, while Argentina are attempting to strengthen their position among the competition’s most successful nations.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered a memorable combination of established stars, emerging talents, unexpected eliminations and high-scoring knockout football. England’s 6–4 victory over France provided a spectacular conclusion to the bronze-medal contest. However, the tournament’s biggest question remains unanswered. Will Spain’s youthful and technically gifted team complete an unbeaten run to the trophy, or will Argentina’s experience and competitive resilience deliver another world title?

The answer will come when Spain and Argentina meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE — AGAIN! PSG RETAIN THE UCL TITLE IN BUDAPEST HEARTBREAK.

Paris Saint-Germain 1–1 Arsenal (AET) | PSG win 4–3 on penalties Puskás Aréna, Budapest | UEFA Champions League Final | 30 May 2026

Paris Saint-Germain are back-to-back Champions League winners.

In one of the most dramatic finals in the history of European football, PSG edged Arsenal 4–3 on penalties after a gripping 1–1 draw through 120 minutes at a sold-out Puskás Aréna in Budapest. It was heartbreak for Arsenal, who end a historic season — their first Premier League title in 22 years — without the European crown they so desperately craved. For Luis Enrique and PSG, history has been written in gold.

⚽ HOW IT HAPPENED

Arsenal struck first and struck early. Just six minutes in, a moment of chaos in the PSG defence saw Marquinhos’ attempted clearance rebound off Leandro Trossard and fall perfectly into the path of Kai Havertz. The German striker ran through on goal from near halfway and fired a composed finish from a narrow angle into the roof of the net. The Premier League champions were ahead in a Champions League final for the first time in their history — the Emirates faithful watching back home erupted.

For the next hour, Arsenal defended with extraordinary discipline and organisation. Despite recording just 26% possession over the course of the contest — the lowest in a Champions League final since records began in 2004 according to Opta — PSG struggled to craft clear-cut chances. Mikel Arteta’s defensive structure, anchored by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, was resolute. Wikipedia

But the equaliser came on 65 minutes, and it was controversial. Ousmane Dembélé equalised from the spot midway through the second half after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was fouled in the box. After a VAR check and sizable delay, Ballon d’Or winner Dembélé sent David Raya the wrong way from the penalty spot to tie things up. Budapest held its breath — 1–1. ESPNWikipedia

Extra time was tense, breathless and largely goalless. Viktor Gyokeres came agonisingly close to a winner with just 10 seconds remaining in extra time, but the Swedish striker could not convert and penalties beckoned. Wikipedia

🎙️ WHAT THEY SAID

Declan Rice said he was “gutted” but proud of his teammates after losing the Champions League final on penalties. Tribuna.com

Mikel Arteta urged Arsenal to be “very ambitious” this summer as he marvelled at Paris Saint-Germain’s quality in the final. Tribuna.com

Luis Enrique, when asked if he should now be considered a legendary manager, replied simply, “Legend? I’m not interested in that.” uefa

French journalist Julien Laurens said in the post-match fallout: “It is cruel for Arsenal fans, but it is inevitable that this club win the Champions League.” uefa

📖 THE BIG PICTURE

PSG joins Real Madrid — who won three successive titles between 2016 and 2018 — as the only team to successfully defend the Champions League since the competition was rebranded in 1992. PSG are only the third side ever to win both their league title and the European Cup in back-to-back seasons, after Real Madrid (1956/57 and 1957/58) and Ajax (1971/72 and 1972/73). For Arsenal, the pain is real, but the progress is undeniable. A first league title in 22 years. A first Champions League final in 20 years. A squad full of world-class talent. The next chapter is already being written.
