It began in December 2019 with just 12 teams drawn from Mushin and Surulere. By its seventh edition in December 2025, it had expanded to 44 teams across multiple categories, including a women’s division.
The 2025 edition was held at the Union Bank Stable in Surulere over two days. In the Under-15 male final, Right to Smile FA defeated Adhoc FA 2-1. The Under-13 male category was won by O&A Sports Academy, who beat Primhous FA 1-0. And in the female division, Wazbak Queens made history by defending their title — becoming the first female team to win back-to-back championships at the Cohesion Tournament.
Partners and sponsors in 2025 included VIVA Plus Detergent, UAC Foods, DiosDelite, Beloxxi Biscuit, Ziba Beach Resort, and the Harrison Obiefule Foundation.

2. The Eko International Cup
The Eko International Cup is the highest-profile grassroots tournament in Lagos – attracting government officials, corporate sponsors, and media attention at a level that few community competitions anywhere in Africa can match.
The 2025 edition was sponsored by MTN and attended by senior Lagos State government representatives, including Sola Aiyepeku, Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission. The tournament ran for eight days of competitive football, with passionate crowds and standout performances throughout.
The final was won by Ikorodu City FC, who defeated Smart City FC to claim the title – their second major grassroots trophy of 2025. The atmosphere was described by attendees as electric, with live drummers, saxophonists, and a DJ keeping energy high throughout.
Why it matters: The Eko International Cup puts Lagos grassroots football in front of government, corporate Nigeria, and the media simultaneously. Winning it changes a club’s trajectory.
3. The 1XCUP Grassroots Competition
The 1XCUP is where Lagos grassroots football meets serious European scouting attention.
The 2025 edition, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, was won by Ikorodu City Football Academy, who defeated ISAGT Athletic 1-0 in the final to claim a ₦10 million cash prize.
What made the 2025 edition landmark was the scouting presence. According to tournament consultant Waidi Akanni of Match International Ltd:
“Throughout this championship, many players have already been scouted within just two or three weeks. Scouts from Italy, Germany, and other countries are here.”
Players were reportedly receiving offers within days of the final.
Why it matters: The 1XCUP is currently the most direct pathway from Lagos street football to European professional contracts. This is the tournament where careers change overnight.
4. The Awo Cup
The Awo Cup has roots deep in Mushin – it first debuted on December 26, 2018, at Bishop Aggey Memorial Grammar School. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, it returned in 2025 with a new venue near Ikorodu, following the foreign-based organiser’s relocation of his football academy to the area.
The Awo Cup represents a growing and important category: diaspora-funded grassroots tournaments — competitions organised and sponsored by Nigerians abroad who want to give back to the communities that shaped them. This model is increasingly common and increasingly powerful for Lagos grassroots football.
Why it matters: Diaspora-funded tournaments bring international awareness and often attract scouts who travel with the organisers. They are an underreported pipeline to professional football.
5. The SO’s Cup
The SO’s Cup was organised by CitySports Africa in 2025, held at the Legacy Pitch at the National Stadium in Surulere. The tournament featured U15 and U18 teams from academies across Lagos and went beyond competition by providing direct financial support to emerging academies.
Cash prizes of ₦50,000 were awarded to winning teams, and special grants of ₦100,000 each were presented to Fortune Football Academy (Oshodi) and other emerging sports institutions – recognition of the vital work being done with very limited resources.
